Spear America is an incredible sponsor, and I highly recommend their gear. In this video, I will also mention some of my favorite spearfishing gear that I personally use.

Spearfishing is not only an exciting sport but also a sustainable and ethical form of fishing. When spearing fish while freediving, we specifically target mature fish that have already bred. This ensures the renewal of fish populations and contributes to the long-term health of our oceans. In a world where commercial fishing nets are depleting fish populations, spearfishing offers a more sustainable alternative.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy this thrilling Alaskan adventure!

Hiking and Relaxation

Our journey begins in Petersburg, Alaska, where we arrive filled with excitement. We are lucky enough to be staying at Eldon’s house, which serves as our home base for the trip. From here, we will embark on an eight-day boat trip to explore the magnificent wonders of Alaska.

As we prepare for our adventure, we ensure we have all the necessary gear. The water in Alaska can be extremely cold, so we are wearing thick wetsuits to stay warm and protected. Additionally, we have obtained fishing licenses so that we can fully immerse ourselves in all the fishing opportunities that await us.

Petersburg is a picturesque town surrounded by nature’s beauty. We take in the breathtaking views, and with our gear packed, we head out on our boat journey. This trip promises a perfect blend of hiking and relaxation as we explore the hidden gems of the Alaskan wilderness.

Encounters with Jellyfish

After a long day of hiking and exploring, we return to Eldon’s house for a delicious dinner and to enjoy the stunning view. As we savor the flavors of Alaskan cuisine, we are joined by a Russian guide named Max. Max shares his insights about the cold glacier water and the danger of swimming in it. He warns us of the risks associated with the freezing water and advises against swimming in it.

Although we are unable to swim in the glacier water, we are still enthralled by the beauty of the surrounding area. We spend the evening engaging in lively discussions and learning from Max’s vast knowledge of the region. It’s moments like these that make our Alaskan adventure truly unforgettable.

Exploring with Eldon as the Tour Guide

Our journey continues as we make our way to our next destination, Bear Enough. The anticipation builds as we look forward to the fishing, diving, and exploring opportunities that lie ahead. Eldon, our knowledgeable tour guide, leads the way, ensuring that we make the most of our time in Alaska.

Throughout our trip, Eldon shares his expertise on fishing, diving spots, and the best places to explore. His passion for the Alaskan wilderness is contagious, and we can’t help but feel privileged to have him as our guide. As we make a brief stop to meet with Max again, we can’t help but appreciate the wealth of knowledge and experiences that both Max and Eldon bring to our adventure.

Hot Springs and Rivers

Our next stop is Fair Enough Springs, a place known for its incredible hot springs. We eagerly dive into the soothing waters, allowing the warmth to envelop us and relieve the tiredness from our journey. As we soak in the hot springs, we engage in conversations and take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us.

During our conversations, the topic of the nearby river emerges. Eldon shares his experiences swimming in the cold river and encourages us to try it for ourselves. Intrigued by the idea, we decide to take up the challenge and experience the thrill of swimming in freezing water.

Swimming in a Cold River

With adventurous spirits, we head to the cold river, ready to take the plunge. The moment our bodies hit the freezing water, we feel a rush of adrenaline like never before. The swim is a refreshing and invigorating experience, allowing us to connect with nature in a unique way. Despite the challenges of swimming in freezing water, we embrace the adventure, knowing that moments like these become cherished memories of our Alaskan journey.

Spearfishing is the most sustainable and ethical form of fishing. Fish speared while freedive spearfishing using a speargun, polespear, or Hawaiian sling are fish, lobsters, and other oceanic delicacies that have already reached maturity and have had a chance to breed. When commercial fishing nets are stripping our ocean’s fish supply, freedive spearfishing is sustainable fishing that allows for the renewal of fish populations. Spearfishing, whether freediving or scuba diving to hunt for seafood, is not just a hobby but a way of life for many.
